How I Got Played by a Castries Man Living a Double Life
How I Got Played by a Castries Man

They say city men sweet with words, but sometimes those same words can drown you if you not careful. My story? It’s one I never thought I’d share. But maybe if I speak, some other woman won’t fall for the same sweet poison.
I met him in Soufrière, of all places. I was there for a cousin’s wedding, and he was standing by the bar in a crisp white shirt, flashing that easy Castries smile. Let’s call him Darnell because even though his real name different, I not here to protect no man’s reputation.
He told me he worked in Castries, had a “little place” in town, but he was tired of the fast life. He said he wanted peace, something real, something country. And me, from Saltibus, I thought maybe God send me this man. For once, a city fella who didn’t want to play games.

For four whole years, I lived in that dream. Darnell would come down to Saltibus on weekends, sometimes bringing groceries, sometimes surprising me with little gifts. We cooked together, we laughed, and before long, we even started a family. A child born into what I thought was love.
But Castries is a different world, a world I didn’t fully see.
One Saturday, I went up to surprise him. He told me he had “a little apartment” near Marchand, so I packed some food and the baby, and I made my way there. I knocked on the door, heart racing with excitement. The door opened, and there she was, a woman with tired eyes but a strong face. Behind her, children running around the living room like they’d been living there forever.

She didn’t ask me who I was. She already knew. She just looked me dead in the eye and said, “So you’s the Saltibus woman.”
And just like that, the whole house of lies came crashing down.
Darnell wasn’t just seeing me. He wasn’t just hiding a girlfriend in the city. He was married. Married, with his own family in Castries, while building a whole different life with me down south. For four years, I was living in his second chapter without even knowing the first page.
I wanted to scream, to cry, to break something. But instead, I picked up my child, turned around, and walked away. Because at that moment, I realized something: a man who can live two lives, who can look you in the eye and whisper love while hiding a wife, is not a man who deserves your tears.
The pain cut deep. Betrayal always does. But the lesson cut deeper.
Never let a man’s presence fool you into thinking he belongs only to you.
Castries men, or any man really, can juggle lives if you let them. Four years of sweet talk, four years of lies, four years I’ll never get back. But what I did gain is strength. Strength to raise my child without shame. Strength to trust my gut the next time. Strength to tell this story so no other woman feel alone.
Because truth is, in this Caribbean life, plenty of us living with secrets we never asked for. But silence only helps the liars. So today, I confess. And tomorrow, I move forward.
Signed,
“The Saltibus Woman”
