Okay, so. Grab a seat, because “Other Lover” is not a breakup song, it’s a deposition, and both parties showed up with receipts.

islands Audiolab opens the track playing the victim card like it’s a royal flush. Don’t call, don’t text, don’t even try to explain yourself, because baby, we already know. Someone got caught with a whole secret situationship tucked “under cover,” and islands is not here for the excuses. The tone is calm, almost too calm, the voice of somebody who has already cried, already Googled the other person, and has now arrived at cold, weaponized clarity. It’s the “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” energy, except set to a afro-beat groove, which honestly makes it hit harder.

And then. THEN. Tori Elle walks in.

Because here’s the plot twist nobody saw coming: this whole time you thought islands was the wronged one? Garcon!, no. Tori Elle comes in laughing, actually laughing, before flipping the entire accusation right back around, word for word, same “under cover” lover, same dramatics, just addressed to “buh buh” instead of “mama.” Turns out SHE had somebody on the side too. She even admits it! Straight up says two wrongs don’t make a right, and then immediately says she’s going to take his feelings for a ride anyway. The audacity. The confidence. This is not a duet, this is two people who cheated on each other simultaneously and are now fighting over who gets to be the main character.

Nobody in this song is innocent and everybody is thriving. That’s the real plot twist. It’s not “he did her wrong,” it’s “they did each other wrong at the exact same time, and now they’re both mad about it in perfect harmony.” Chaotic. Iconic. Deeply relatable if you’ve ever been in a situationship with a group chat involved.

Production wise, the beat is smart enough to stay out of the way and just let the shade simmer. A laid back island afro-beat bounce underneath all this mess, never once trying to compete with the drama up top. The hook leans hard on the phrase “don’t bother,” repeated so many times it stops sounding like a plea and starts sounding like someone changing the locks mid sentence.

Bottom line: “Other Lover” is messy, catchy, and exactly the kind of drama you’d want your friend group chat discussing at midnight. islands and Tori Elle aren’t just trading verses, they’re trading receipts, and nobody walks away looking good, which, weirdly, is what makes it so much fun to listen to.
